Electric Bill

Do you want to save money on your electric bill? I think we all do. If you have access to your attic where you can see the top of the trusses - the 2x4's then you should consider putting in what is called a radiant barrier. Don't get duped by companies wanting to charge you thousands to install. Instead do it yourself. There is company that I ordered my radiant barrier from. It cost less than 150 dollars for my entire home. This will save you money mostly during the summer season.

If you considering replacing your home heating unit consider getting heat pump. Heat pumps are the only efficient way to heat your home with electricity. However, there are some draw backs to heat pumps. If you live in an area with a very cold climate - say 30 below most of the winter then the heat pump will stop putting out heat. Instead get what is called a gas package unit. The heat pump will work down to the level where it can and then when it stops putting out heat the gas kicks in to heat your home.

However, there are some problems with the gas as well. For one they are only 80% efficient. These numbers may vary depending on the unit, but the exhaust gases are released outside of the home. This makes it more safe where no carbon monoxide can be leaked into your home. If you live in a bigger house an indoor gas fireplace can work great. These are 100% efficient but in small areas carbon monoxide can be an issue.

Gas vs. heat? Gas is cheaper to heat a home with. If you don't believe me then google it. On a national level gas is cheaper. Electric is one of the worst ways to heat a home. However, if you live in an area that allows it a wood fireplace may be your cheapest route. However, the temperature is harder to control. When the fire goes out during the night the heat stops.

What about these so called infrared heaters? They are nothing more than a glorified space heater. They use electric heat and most use around 1,500 watts of electricity. 1,500 watts is quite a bit. They say that they "save" you money. Yes, they can but here is the catch. You set your thermostat down really low and close off all the unused rooms to your house. Basically you heat only the area needed. But that will work most of the time anyhow with any space heater.

One way to really really save money is to use what is called a "Rocket Mass Heater". This is kind of complicated to explain. They are really cool but not very mainstream. So unless you live in a rural area they may not work for you. You may have to check with your house insurance policy as well. Sometimes it's better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission though lol. These are extremely efficient at putting out heat. They use very little wood and heat an area for hours AFTER the fire goes out.
